Your Questions about Family Planning Center

Q:  I need an STD test but I don't have any medical and I don't have any money.  What should I do?

A: Visit Family Planning!  Family Planning can help you out.  We have a sliding fee scale and offer FPBP-which you may be eligible for.  (Click here to learn more: FPBP)  No one is turned away for the inability to pay.  We have offices in Penn Yan, Bath and Geneva.  If you do not live in this area check for a local Family Planning Center or Planned Parenthood at this link (click on Health Centers): http://www.fpaofnys.org.

Q: Can my gynecologist tell my parents that I am sexually active if I am 17 years old?  I know it depends on the state you are located…but what about in Louisiana?

A:  The answer to your question-whether or not your gynecologist can tell your parents you are sexually active because you are 17 is no.  However even though they cannot disclose that information does not necessarily mean they can or cannot disclose the fact that you’ve made a visit to their office.  Details to this answer would depend highly on the circumstances.  In general if you visit a Family Planning Center or Planned Parenthood your rights of confidentiality will be protected and most FPC’s or PP’s have low cost or free services.  If you visit another doctor where you possibly may be using your parent’s insurance there is a possibility that they could find out.  However the best thing for you to do if you are concerned with your parents finding out is to ask these questions to the doctor who sees you.  For specific state information visit this link from sxetc.org: http://www.sxetc.org/index.php?topic=Sex+in+the+States&state=louisiana.

Q: How much does birth control cost on average?  How much does the morning after pill cost on average?

A: There are a wide range of prices for birth control and for Emergency Contraception (the morning after pill) depending on what you get and where you get them.  If you go to a Family Planning Clinic like ours or like many others around the world you will find that birth control will probably cost less than at a drug store directly.  The same is true for Emergency Contraception.  I don't know what area you live in...but I would recommend calling local drug stores and reproductive health clinics to ask directly.  They don't even need to know your name to answer that question for you.  Good luck.

Q: How much does it cost to go to Family Planning Center?  What if you don't have health insurance?  Could you get medicine without your parents knowing?

A: The cost of services and birth control supplies/medications varies with each person.  At Family Planning we have a sliding fee scale which means the amount you have to pay for your services and birth control/medications is based upon your income (not your parents) and ability to pay.  No one is turned away for inability to pay.  Medicaid and most insurances are accepted and if you do not have insurance you may be eligible for our Family Planning Benefit Program (FPBP).  We do strongly suggest and support parental involvement, however we do understand that it is not always an option for some teens and for that reason all services at Family Planning are confidential.  If you have any further questions, stop by one of our clinics or feel free to call, locations, numbers and hours can be found on our homepage.  Thanks for your question.

Q: I was wondering if I could get birth control form FPC without my parents knowing?

A: YES! All services are confidential!  Parents do not need to know.
